Karusa – a new brew for the Klein Karoo (by Lucy Corne)

May 24, 2012
tags:

For Jacques Conradie, brewing just seemed to make sense. His garagiste-style brewery – the latest licensed addition to the ever-expanding Western Cape Brew Route – sits in the family winery, Karusa, just outside Oudtshoorn.

Jacques is well-qualified to make booze – a trained winemaker, he has worked at Graham Beck and several other Cape wineries before returning home to produce wine in the Klein Karoo. So far in his career, he has been responsible for making MCC, port-style wines, still wines and is keen to dabble in distilling. And as a 50/50 wine and beer drinker, it seemed like only a matter of time before he turned his hand to brewing.

At present, Karusa serves just one beer – an easy-drinking pale ale labelled Amber Gold. But there are big plans underway – a new 500-litre brewery was due to be delivered when we visited; Jacques is experimenting with new hops and different beer styles and there’s talk of hosting a beer festival later in the year – a perfect pursuit in a town where summer temperatures often top 40 degrees.

Once the brewery is fully up-and-running – which should be in October this year – there will be a trio of beers to choose from. For now, Karusa’s Amber Gold can be tasted on tap at the winery, at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge and at the well-priced and much raved about Bello Cibo restaurant in Oudtshoorn.

Karusa is based in Schoemanshoek, on the way to the Cango Caves.

A long list of Western Cape breweries – May 2012

May 22, 2012

It is time to update this list of breweries. When I first started making a list I just wanted a long list for my self and figured that some of you might want one as well.

Should I make one for the whole country?

Since last time I have added Citizen, Stellenbosch Brewing Company, Stellenbrau and Cape Brewing Company.  Please let me know if there are some information that needs to be corrected. Brewers that is not yet established and that don´t have a website is not on the list.

Åbro Brewery and Cape Brewing Company

May 9, 2012

Now it is official! The Swedish brewery Åbro is going to establish them self in South Africa.

Henrik  Dunge, Managing Director at Åbro Brewery tells me that:  It is going to be a joint venture between Åbro and Charles Back, the owner of Fairview / Seidelberg. The brewmaster is going to be Wolfgang Ködel (former brewmaster at Paulaner in Cape Town). The new brewery is going to have a capacity of 1,6 million liters (a 30 hl brewery). In South Africa we could brew some special beers and maybe some of them will be exported to Sweden.

They are going to both bottle and keg their beers. The first brew is planned to November 2012.

This is fantastic news. Not that Åbro i famous for brewing great beers but this kind of cooperation is great news. New beers might be imported to South Africa and hopefully South African beers can be exported to Sweden. I am going to follow this project really close.

This is not the first time a Swedish brewer/brewery is going to establish in South Africa. Swedish brewers has been involved in South African beer and brewing for more than 200 years. You could still visit some of the old brewery buildings at Newlands Brewery (Heritage Park). Jacob Letterstedt emigrated from Sweden in 1819 and came to Cape Town in 1920. Soon after that he started the Mariendahl Brewery in Newlands.  The second person from Sweden who was involved in a brewery was Anders Ohlsson. In the 1860th he started Anneberg Brewery with the best selling Lion Lager as prime product.

Stellenbosch Brewing Company

May 3, 2012

A couple of days ago I wrote about the new Cape Brewing Company. Hopefully they will open up in a couple of months.  Very close by there’s another brewing project going on. The Stellenbosch Brewing Company at Klein Joostenberg.  Philip Myburgh at Joosteberg commented : I believe that Klein Joostenberg is well placed to operate a small brewery to service the Western Cape area. I believe so too!

He invites me to come and have a look at the location but unfortunately I am a little bit to far away at the moment to be able to visit their facility. I have been there before though but at that time there was no brewery. Maybe some of you have been there recently to give me an update. Stellenbosch Brewing Company is in its early stages of development and it might take some time before we could have a chance to buy some new beers from the brewery. I am happy though to add yet another stop to the Western Cape Brew Route.

Cape Brewing Company

April 27, 2012

I continue to write about new breweries in Western Cape. Last time it was about the Brothers in Arms Brewery and before that Bulldog Brewery in Struisbaai. This time it is about the Cape Brewing Company (former Fairview Cheese Company) at the Seidelberg Farm in Paarl. Fairview is part of the Spice Route concept. According to Andy Kung (for the Cape Brewing Company) they have lots happening on the Spice Route Farm in the upcoming months and they will keep me posted about all beer related things. When they are ready I will add them on to the Western Cape Brew Route. They are in a really early stage of establishment but I wanted you all to know they exist. If we are lucky they might appear in Cape Town as well. The plans is to have a tasting room and public viewing room inside the brewery. Outside there will be a beer garden.

Vineyards or farms that start brewing beer is not a new phenomenon but there are not that many out there. Birkenhead Brewery in Stanford and Dieu Donné in Franschoek is two examples. The Village Brewery (former Barrique Brewery) in Stellenbosch is another. Then you have some former and/or trained winemakers at Devil´s Peak Brewing Company and at Bulldog Brewery.
The cooperation between the restaurant Den Anker and Jordan Winery is also really interesting and I do hope they will continue their plan.

Shortly I will write about more new brewery on the way. I just need to get some things confirmed!

There are no specific information about the Cape Brewery at the moment but here are some links to the Spice Route partners.
