Cape Brewing Company

April 27, 2012

I continue to write about new breweries in Western Cape. Last time it was about the Brothers in Arms Brewery and before that Bulldog Brewery in Struisbaai. This time it is about the Cape Brewing Company (former Fairview Cheese Company) at the Seidelberg Farm in Paarl. Fairview is part of the Spice Route concept. According to Andy Kung (for the Cape Brewing Company) they have lots happening on the Spice Route Farm in the upcoming months and they will keep me posted about all beer related things. When they are ready I will add them on to the Western Cape Brew Route. They are in a really early stage of establishment but I wanted you all to know they exist. If we are lucky they might appear in Cape Town as well. The plans is to have a tasting room and public viewing room inside the brewery. Outside there will be a beer garden.

Vineyards or farms that start brewing beer is not a new phenomenon but there are not that many out there. Birkenhead Brewery in Stanford and Dieu Donné in Franschoek is two examples. The Village Brewery (former Barrique Brewery) in Stellenbosch is another. Then you have some former and/or trained winemakers at Devil´s Peak Brewing Company and at Bulldog Brewery.
The cooperation between the restaurant Den Anker and Jordan Winery is also really interesting and I do hope they will continue their plan.

Shortly I will write about more new brewery on the way. I just need to get some things confirmed!

There are no specific information about the Cape Brewery at the moment but here are some links to the Spice Route partners.

As far as I’m aware, Seidelberg is no more (got to take advantage of cheap wines when they closed last year)…Spice Route is actually owned by the same guys who own Fairview. I learnt in Feb that the brewery, run by some well-known SA craft beer faces, should be up and running by September (according to Spice Route) along with a chocolatier and distillery! Exciting stuff!

I think that was the plan anyway! But this came from the (very friendly) staff at Spice Route, not from the people they said were behind the brewery so don’t know if it’s correct…I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
