Woodstock Brewery

December 19, 2011

What´s up with the new brewery in Woodstock? I often get questions about this new brewery but to be honest I do not know all that much.

What I do know is that behind the development is the company Midnight Feast Properties and the new owner is Andre Viljoen. It is going to be situated at 252 Albert Road/1 Gelb Lane in Woodstock. Close to the Old Biscuit Mill.  There are some issues regarding parking areas, access road to the property and so on but I do not know if that is why they are delayed.

The brew equipment comes from Zhongde in China.

I also know that they have involved the danish brewer Christian Skovdal Andersen in the process. If he is going to be the brewmaster at this new brewery or “just” brew there I do not really know.

I just hope that there will be some new and innovative beers coming out of that new brewery …. soon!

    Hi Joakim,

Apologies for not replying sooner with an update, I have been busy navigating the red tape of building plan approvals which, while frustrating, has been educational and more importantly, to the point. Each time our renovation plans have been turfed out, it has been with good reason. Hopefully we are nearing the end of that challenge. There have been a number of challenges with the building, but it remains our baby as it is exactly what we wanted – to renovate and breathe life back into a building designed for what we need it for. And it is located on a strip of burgeoning like-minded businesses in a foodie Mecca.

We are still interested in getting Christian on board, though because our plans have taken so long, have stopped with the estimated start dates etc. I will drop him a line when we get building approvals, to start with a realistic conversation… Christian, hope you are reading this.

The equipment has been designed by a German Brewmaster and has been manufactured by Zhongde. He has worked extensively with them and knows what we need. I will give comment once it is in place, but thus far they have been great. We have requested a very wide range of functionality and they have accommodated our requirements.

Recently we partnered with some of the Devil’s Peak guys and bought the Paulaner restaurant and brewing equipment. We are in the process of deciding who needs what, but hopefully that equipment will be put to good use some time soon. I have to say, that is a venue I miss already. Had a couple of pints of their depleting stocks of Weiss today and was re-inspired! Prost! Wolfgang.

The idea behind what we want to do is probably best described by the name of the movie “Field of Dreams”. We wanted to build something that could be used as a base to aspiring micro brewers giving access to a master brewer and an infrastructure to support purchase of ingredients, help in distribution and help in admin (these are the things that romantics don’t think about). Passion first, but it needs to make economical sense. We will give an update on this one as soon as we have a better idea of our stakeholders.

Lastly, there is no doubt we will have some new innovative stuff stuff… who is going to do it is up in the air.

    Best,

    Andre Viljoen

Hello Andre, May I send you information about a Stellenbosch company called Vinwood that makes magnificent furniture from used French Oak wine vats. The pricing is very competitive and the design is verging on Scandinavian. Greetings, Susan
