It is always a pleasure to write about new breweries in South Africa. This time I follow-up on one of my earlier blog posts.
An all-girl brewery in Modderfontein, Johannesburg! I wrote an article about them (Modderfontein Brewery) last year but at that time it was just a brew project at the 33 High Street restaurant in Johannesburg. Since then a lot has happened and they will officially open (mid to end of July) as Oakes Brew House.
According to Joanne Barton “the house is brewing and we need to check quality etc. In the mean time we do have stocks on tap to try … ! ”

Atlantic Storm Brewery
” It was a long, dark and very cold day in the southern part of Africa. A storm was blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The Craft Beer revolution had just arrived and swept away the “lonely brewery” era. The storm made way for new, small and independent Craft Breweries. “
… talking about a storm from the Atlantic. There is a new brewery on the way in Kommetjie, Cape Town.
The people behind this new, Atlantic Storm Brewery, are:
* Cameron Doubell who is the brew-master and beer-designer
* Nicholas Engelbrecht who is the financial advisor and will manage all financial matters
* JP Engelbrecht who is the engineer and will manage all equipment
The brewery is in Herons Park in Kommetjie (near Compass Bakery). At the moment they are still renovating the factory and haven’t got any equipment in.
What kind of beers are they going to brew?
According to Cameron they want to ” – brew beers with a unique flavour. We like to take everyday flavours and add them to beers”.
In fact, you have had the opportunity to try their beer already. They had a spiced ale (with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, orange peel and honey) that won The Rogue Brewer Award at the South Yeasters Summer Festival this year. They have also just done a collaboration with Tribe Coffee, making an Irish coffee milk stout.
Where could I buy Atlantic Storm Beers?
We just have to wait and see but they already have a couple of restaurants and markets that would like to stock their beers.

That Brewing Co.
KwaZulu-Natal will soon have yet another brewery. That Brewing Company is finalizing their brewery in Umbilo, just south of the Durban City Centre. The brewery has a close connection to the Unity Bar & Brasserie in Durban. That might reveal some of the places where you could find beers from That Brewing Co. in the future.
What kind of beers are they going to brew? I do not know at the moment but a wild guess is that they will start brewing the Cowbell Premium Pilsner (brewed at Shongweni Brewery today).
